47-year-old Madison County jail inmate dies

A 47-year-old Madison County jail inmate died after being found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday, authorities said.

The man’s name hasn’t yet been released. Madison County Coroner Tyler Berryhill said the body was autopsied today at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville.

“Determination of cause of death is pending further studies,” Berryhill told AL.com.

Jail workers found the man unresponsive around 5 p.m., said Sheriff Kevin Turner in a news release. Nurses and jailers administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived to take the man to the hospital, the sheriff said. The man was declared dead by doctors at Huntsville Hospital.

Turner said the man’s death is believed to be the result of natural causes.

“There were no obvious signs of any blunt force trauma, sharped edge trauma, or suicide by the inmate,” Turner said.

Sheriff’s office investigators are probing the death.

Further details weren’t immediately available.
