Getting Golden Globes Ready With Celeste In A “Very Special” Custom Gucci Gown
“I’m currently listening to Darondo in my favourite green-coloured boots, and that’s how I plan to stay for the evening until the main event. This is my first-ever virtual awards ceremony so any rituals that may become habitual will be set in stone after this evening, I suppose,” British-Jamaican soul singer Celeste told British Vogue of her preparation for one of Hollywood’s biggest nights of the year, the Golden Globes.
Fast-forward a few hours, and the singer’s rituals have been firmly set in stone – along with her ability to light up a virtual red-carpet. In a custom Gucci velvet gown with multicoloured striped sequin panels and gold-encrusted lion head earrings, the singer – whose star has continued to rise since being named as the BBC Sound of 2020 – embodies that sultry ’70s vibe that she’s quickly becoming known for. “It definitely feels very special, the gown makes me feel like something actually happened,” says Celeste. “Without the gown, everything just falls into a blur. I love the ribboned panels of sequins cascading to the floor.”

For Celeste, dressing up in Gucci’s latest designs has become something of a prerequisite since falling for the brand’s charms in a pre-pandemic time. “When I first went to Gucci’s show in February of last year, I saw how many wonderful people were adorned in their beautiful garments, she recalls. “I saw how willing they were to accommodate every body type and that was what drew me to them as a brand.”
It’s easy to see why events and such becoming a blur could easily happen to the household-name who was nominated for best original song for “Hear My Voice” in The Trial of the Chicago 7. She may have lost out to “IO SI (Seen)” in The Life Ahead, but she’s still got another nomination for the Oscars to go. “It’s all very surreal,” she muses. “At the moment, it seems quite far-fetched – especially as the rest of my existence is still somewhat ordinary.”
Hailing from west London, Celeste’s life may still feel “ordinary” but her musical accomplishments are anything but. In 2021, she achieved the first female number one debut album with “Not Your Muse” in five years on home soil. “Although I feel proud of my accomplishment, it saddened me that it had been that long since a British female debuted at number one,” she says honestly. “Hopefully, we won’t see that statistic again in another five years’ time.” Throughout the pandemic, she’s found it to be a creatively fruitful period. “Lockdown has definitely had its limitations at points, but I have found it to be a really valuable time for me,” she continues. “I have really had the chance to sit with my thoughts and let them evolve into musical ideas naturally without too much pressure – which in the couple of years leading up to 2020, I definitely felt like there was always something over my shoulder.”
