Costa Mesa’s Estancia High School beat out teams from nine other high schools Sunday, April 7, to take first place in the Southern California Building Industry Association’s annual “Design/Build” competition in Huntington Beach.

Twelve teams from area high schools, Orange Coast College and the Orange County 4-H Club took part in the competition during which students from homebuilding classes had 1½ days to build a tilt-roof garden shed, complete with a Dutch door, window, vent and flower box.

Judges from Shea Homes, Toll Brothers and Taylor Morrison inspected the sheds throughout the weekend, ranking each team on safety and craftsmanship.

The competition is part of the California Homebuilding Foundation’s BITA program, or Building Industry Technology Academy, a four-year high school curriculum that guides students into the construction industry, either as a career path or as a way to help pay their way through college.

BITA, which started at Anaheim’s Katella High School in 2002, is offered at 29 California high schools.

Brea Olinda High School’s BITA team won second place in the weekend competition, and Los Osos High School of Rancho Cucamonga won third.

In addition to the Rancho Cucamonga team, the competition drew teams from seven Orange County high schools and two from Los Angeles County. Awards were limited to high school-level students, so Orange Coast College’s team wasn’t included in the ranking.

Donations financed the lumber, building materials, blueprints and other materials used in the competition.
