After bad reviews and negative publicity, industry insiders are now asking whether “SATC” spin-off “And Just Like That” will return for a second season.
The show has been slammed as “woke, weird and awful” by critics and fans alike. Despite this, one well-placed source insisted to Page Six that the likelihood of a second season is high. “The creative conversations haven’t happened yet, but everyone is feeling good about the show,” the source said.
Another industry insider said: “They may feel that they want to prove a point that they can make a second season stronger and that it was valid to bring it back for fans.”
With just two episodes left, HBO Max bosses have yet to announce whether the show will make a comeback.
Questions over the show’s future come after Chris Noth, who plays Mr. Big, was caught up in a sex assault scandal shortly following the show’s premiere in December. Noth — whose character died in the first episode — has been dropped from an emotional Paris finale, where Big was meant to return in a vision to his widow Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker.
One TV source told us: “It’s an expensive show to make and HBO Max will have to look at how many subscribers it brought in — and how many subscribers actually stayed watching the show each week.”
The streamer does not make its figures public, but HBO, including HBO Max, ended 2021 with 73.8 million global subscribers.
When asked if “AJLT” was returning, HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told Vulture last month it would be down to show star Sarah Jessica Parker and her co-executive producer Michael Patrick King, adding: “To tell you the truth, it would be a conversation, because I have no idea.
“They kind of came together to do this. They were all really busy and doing other things. So it is certainly a conversation we’ll have — for sure. But we haven’t decided anything or done anything.”
He added: “I’m going to leave it up to these guys to figure out what they want to do, but I’m very happy with what they’ve done. I will tell you, it’s kind of what you want in a show like this. It really does feel like you’re picking up with old friends and haven’t missed a beat.”
