A former Homewood City Councilman was arrested Thursday on child sex charges.

Vance Allen Moody was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:41 p.m., jail records show. He is charged with first-degree sex abuse and sex abuse of a child under the age of 12.

Moody, 55, was elected to the Homewood City Council in 2008. He did not seek re-election for the 2016-2020 term. He is a metallurgist who also has served as a youth athletics coach and was a member of the Homewood Park Board and the Homewood City Schools Foundation.

Moody was arrested by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies on a warrant that was issued by Homewood police. The charges reportedly stem from an incident within the past week. Repeated efforts to reach Homewood police officials for comment were unsuccessful and efforts to reach Moody for comment Thursday afternoon also were unsuccessful.

He was released from the county jail on $45,000 bond less than two hours after his arrest.
