STATEN ISLAND, N.Y -- New York City really wants Amazon to consider it for its HQ2 -- a second U.S. headquarters.

For this reason, the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center will go "Amazon Orange" at 9 p.m. Wednesday -- until 2 a.m. -- to support the city's bid for Amazon's HQ2.

In addition, Times Square screens and billboards, as well as the LinkNYC kiosks  will also be lit up for five minutes starting at 9 p.m. to support Amazon citing HQ2 in NYC.

THE BID

After Amazon put out a nationwide call for proposals for its second headquarters last month, New York City decided to throw its hat into the ring.

As a first step, EDC released a Request For Expressions of Interest (REFI)  last month seeking proposals.

Since issued, the city has gotten more than 24 proposals for locations for Amazon's second headquarters, including at least one on Staten Island, officials said.

"This will allow us to take individual ideas -- from property owners and developers, tech and business leaders, elected officials and community organizations -- and produce the strongest possible proposal," said Anthony Hogrebe, an EDC spokesman to the Advance last month.

He said that city officials plan to make a strong case for why New York City would be a great location for Amazon's HQ2.

"The case for NYC is strong; we have the best workforce and the largest customer base. We're a magnet for tech and innovation, we already have a huge presence of Amazon partners and verticals, and we're a place that talented people want to live. Our focus is on marketing NYC as the best place for tech, and the only city big enough to meet the needs of both Amazon and their workers," said Hogrebe.
