According to a letter sent to families from the school, the student was found unconscious in a bathroom Tuesday morning. Staff called for medical assistance and the student was taken to an area hospital.

The Arlington County Police Department said Friday morning that it is conducting a death investigation following the teen’s death Thursday at the hospital. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of the teen's death, police said.

The teen's death remains an active investigation, police said, and anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Arlington County Police Department’s Tip Line at 703-228-4180 or ACPDTipline@arlingtonva.us. Information also may also be reported anonymously through the Arlington County Crime Solvers hotline at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

In a separate incident this week, Wakefield was locked down on Thursday while police searched the school for a trespasser who was alleged to have been on campus. No trespasser was found. Classes were canceled for Friday to give students time to process the events of the week.

In the teen's overdose, shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the student was found unconscious in a school bathroom at Wakefield High School. Students were held in their second period classes at the request of police as the incident was investigated, WJLA reported.

Officers collected evidence and spoke with witnesses. Based on the preliminary information, the incident is being investigated as an apparent drug overdose, police said on Tuesday.
