KENBRIDGE, VA — A Virginia woman got a slithery surprise last week while searching for the perfect bag of popcorn at a Lunenburg County grocery store.

Kimberly Slaughter was shopping at Shoppers Value in Kenbridge on Thursday when a possible rat snake peeked out of a popcorn bag to say hello, WTVR reported. Slaughter wanted popcorn but was taking this particular bag to an employee because she noticed a small hole in it.

"As soon as I went to put the bag in my basket to take it up front because, you know, they can't sell it. The thing had popped out, and you know, I was like, oh, well, hi!" Slaughter told WTVR.

While reporting the intruder to store staff, the snake slid out of the popcorn bag, down the cart, and back into the bag, Slaughter said.

"It was the full length of the cart," Slaughter told WTVR. "It had prime real estate though."

Strangely, this isn't the first time a snake surprised a shopper while crossing items off their grocery list.

Last year, Diane Dupre found herself very much alone with a very real black rat snake in the middle of a North Carolina Target store aisle. Dupre thought someone was pranking her, but while grabbing a can of beans, she discovered her unexpected shopping companion was most certainly not a joke.

"As I zoomed in, I was going to take a photo, the tongue came out — and that's how I knew this is a real snake," Dupre said.
