Amazing Akita Mix At County Shelter For 'Far Too Long'

Zeus the cuddlebug has been at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County shelter for almost 600 days. Those who love him hope he finds a home soon.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Named after the all powerful Greek god, 7.5-year-old Zeus is an Akita mix who's strong name is befitting the larger sized dog who actually is more of an overgrown lovably teddy bear. He's fluffy and sweet and has been searching for his forever home for "far too long."

Zeus has been living at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County for almost 600 days, but is described by everyone as a "super amazing dog." Staff and volunteers are afraid he gets passed over because of his size and age. He also barks at his kennel door when he knows people are walking by, but he only wants their attention.

With a beautiful brindle color and curly tail, Zeus arrived at the shelter when his first owner was transferred out of the country and couldn't take the pup along. His second owner ended up moving, too. Poor Zeus never had the chance to set down roots and enjoy a furever family.

Because he hasn't had much stability in his life, it would be best if Zeus was the only pet in the home and because he's a larger breed, older kids would be best. But he loves to go for walks and lounge around. Karen Meek with the SPCA of Anne Arundel County shared the sweetest story about Zeus during the holidays.

"Last Thanksgiving, he charmed the ladies who delivered puppy pies and got himself three extras. We hope he can spend this next Thanksgiving in a forever home finally. He's handsome and lovable and definitely a staff/volunteer favorite," she told Patch.

Karen Beck described Zeus as a "happy-go-lucky, kissy-face, big roly poly teddy bear at heart."

"He loves to play in the snow and can catch any snowball thrown his way. He loves treats and always gladly excepts your offer of one and hopefully more," she told Patch.

Anne Rose also referred to Zeus as a teddy bear, but with athleticism mixed in, too.

"He’s a great running buddy and never passes up a chance to go for a car ride or get belly rubs. He can’t help but wag that curly tail whenever he sees his friends," she told Patch.

Nicole Buchman said Zeus is a favorite not just at the shelter but among those in the community who have met him.

"He loves to go for car rides and especially when he gets to visit all of his friends at Zu Coffee Shop. He is a big dog who thinks he’s the size of a chihuahua, wanting to always lay on your lap and snuggle. He is also the silliest goober you will ever meet. He is part of the SPCA’s Race Team and loves it when we run to hip hop, Indian pop and reggae He loves to roll in the grass and be told how awesome he is," Buchman told Patch.
