Suspect arrested after teen attacked in downtown Calgary

A 29-year-old woman was arrested after a downtown Calgary attack in which a teen was stabbed in the neck on Tuesday, according to police.

Officers responded to an assault near the City Hall LRT station, in the 600 block of Macleod Trail S.E., at around 4:45 p.m.

Police said five people confronted the 17-year-old, which escalated to the stabbing.

Officers said witnesses jumped to the teen’s aid and called 911. EMS said the teen was taken to hospital with a serious injury but was in non-life-threatening condition.​

Witnesses said police told them to remain calm as they searched for a suspect on the CTrain with guns drawn.

“It was a busy time of day. There were a lot of witnesses on the scene and that led to us apprehending the female very quickly after the attack,” Staff Sgt. Todd McNutt told Global News on Wednesday.

On Tuesday shortly before 9 p.m., police said a suspect was in custody in connection with the incident.

Chantel Nicole Blackface was charged with aggravated assault and breach of probation, and is scheduled to appear in court on July 22.

Police are investigating are trying to determine if there was any connection between the teen and the group — but police are considering the attack to be a random incident.

“Obviously, [it’s] concerning that the event happened, but as far as risk to the public, we don’t have any,” McNutt said.
