One of the toughest things about the very tough job of being an actor is that your hair isn't really yours. If a director wants it short, you cut it. If they want it long, they grow it. If they want it to be Jon Snow's shaggy man, you spend the best of a decade looking like the drummer from an Eighties metal band and complaining about it on chat shows.

But Adam Driver is A Talent. Which is why, regardless of his role, producers and directors leave his hair untouched. When he's punching walls in frustration at the nuances of Californian divorce laws in Marriage Story, it's a neat, long-ish mop. When he's second-guessing how fun the Dark Side really is in Star Wars, it's the same neat, long-ish mop. Tot up Oscar nominations all you want, but that's what really puts him alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the ranks of Hollywood's best actors.

But, while Driver is indeed the sort of up-and-coming thesp the Academy loves to ignore, his hair remains unchanged because it doesn't really need changing. It works. What's more, it always will. When the 2020 Oscars ceremony becomes the #throwback archival imagery of tomorrow's Instagram feed, Driver's haircut will remain a classic.

"Longer locks are all the rage in Hollywood at the moment, and Driver perfectly captures that arty yet masculine vibe," says Maxwell Oakley, barber at Ruffians Shoreditch. And a large cross-section of men stand to benefit. "This look is best-suited to medium to thick hair types, and it also works on loose curls too." So if you've got some weight, and a face shape that won't be swamped by a longer length, it could be for you.

"Ask your barber to give you a mid-length round layer," says Oakley. "The key with a layer cut like this is to even the distribution of weight all over the head, and Driver's barber has kept it perfectly balanced." Once you're finished in the barber's chair, it requires little upkeep. "Depending on how thick and bouncy your hair is, you could leave it loose and let it dry naturally. Alternatively flatten with a heavier product, like a a matt clay, or blow-dry it smooth and flat with a paddle brush for a slightly more retro look."

That means you can get on with the job in hand, like improving break-up scenes with Scarlett Johansson, singing Sondheim for your mate Noah Baumbauch, and, of course, practicing your respectful, humble, really-pleased-for-them face, just in case Joaquin scoops Best Actor. They can keep the trophy. Whatever. You're the one going home with Best Hair.
