A man accused of fatally stabbing a Washington, DC, jogger was allegedly high on the synthetic drug K2 when the attack occurred, according to a report released Saturday.
Authorities arrested Anthony Crawford, 23, Thursday and charged him with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Wendy Martinez, 35, multiple times in the street while she went jogging in D.C.’s Logan Circle neighborhood Tuesday night.
A witness told authorities that Crawford was an “avid user of the synthetic narcotic K2,” according to court documents obtained by WTOP.
“Yea, that’s him walking, and he is probably high,” the witness reportedly told police, adding that the suspect’s nickname was “Fatz Gleezy.”
Police said they were able to identify Crawford by his “very distinct” mustard-colored shirt from the witness account and surveillance footage of the suspect.
The suspect stabbed Martinez’s neck and head seven times around 8 p.m. Tuesday before she stumbled into a nearby carryout restaurant to warn others of the attacker, according to surveillance video of the incident.
Some patrons ran out of the restaurant to search for her attacker while others tried to save Martinez’s life. She later died at a local hospital from her wounds.
Martinez’s mother, Cora, when she learned a suspect in her daughter’s murder had been arrested, said she forgives the man even though her heart is “broken.”
“I want to say that I have forgiven,” the grieving mother said. “My heart has been broken in a thousand pieces, but I forgive the man because I know it wasn’t him. It was somebody else. It was evil.”
