Why this penis-scented candle costs more than Goop’s vagina candle

This whole scented candle thing is getting nuts.

Days after Gwyneth Paltrow’s online store Goop sold out of a genitalia-themed candle, “This Smells Like My Vagina,” a penis-scented version has sprung up online.

Canadian ad agency Taxi unveiled the “This Smells Like My Penis” candle on its website Tuesday, but it’s not to make the boys feel more included.

The agency created the candle, which is nearly identical to the $75 Goop product but priced at $100, as a way to highlight the gender pay gap in Canada.

“This candle costs 25 percent more than its vagina-smelling equivalent,” the site reads, “because even though it’s illegal in Canada to pay women less than men, the gender pay gap smells as strong as ever.”

According to Taxi, Canadian women earn 75 cents for every dollar men make. In the United States, women earned 85 percent of what men earned in 2018, according to the Pew Research Center.

While the site did not reveal what the penis-scented candle smells like, the black-and-white packaging looks just like the Goop candle, which smells like geranium, citrusy bergamot and cedar.

The replication, a copywriter for Taxi told Insider, is meant to represent the absurdity that Canadian women are still paid less than men.

“The Smells Like My Penis candle is no different from the Smells Like My Vagina candle, except for no apparent reason it’s worth 25 percent more,” Allegra Weisenfeld told Insider. “With the candle, we want to hammer home the point that [Canadian] women are still paid 75 cents on the dollar for the same work.”
