BOSTON — Andrew Cashner has been with the Red Sox for two weeks. He’s made exactly one start against their hated rival in New York. And he sounds like he’ll fit right in.
“Everyone grows up hating the Yankees, right?” Cashner told reporters following a 10-5 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park on Friday night.
Cashner finished the night having given up three runs over 6 2/3 innings, scattering 10 hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
“Kind of what he normally does,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “And obviously he’s had a pretty consistent year. The ability to run the four-seamer up. We saw some mid-to-upper 90s. He sinks with the fastball. He cuts it. His changeup and slider — they’re all factors and if he’s commanding it, he can be a challenge.”
He had been terrible in his first two starts with Boston, posting a 7.36 ERA after getting traded from the Orioles.
A few days ago, Cashner let it be known he wanted nothing to do with the Yankees.
He said he would rather retire than to shave his beard, which the Marlins made him do in 2016.
The Yankees’ team facial hair policy forbids beards and long hair.
“I didn’t want to shave,” Cashner said. “I contemplated going home. Like, not showing up. In this game, you don’t really have a lot of decisions. So if it’s something you don’t really want to do, you don’t have to do it."
