BIRMINGHAM, AL β€” Birmingham area residents should appreciate the clear skies and mild weather Tuesday, because in a few days, some possibly severe storms are expected to sweep through the metro area, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS Birmingham office said all of Central Alabama will be under some kind of severe weather watch at some point Saturday, and many will be on watch Friday as well. Heavy rainfall, damaging wind and possible tornadoes could travel across the state beginning Friday afternoon.

"We will have the dual threat of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms across Alabama Friday and Saturday," said meteorologist James Spann. "Rain amounts between three and six inches are likely over the northern third of Alabama, with totals around two inches likely for the southern part of the state. The ground is saturated and flooding is a very real possibility."
