Grab your lightsabers and get ready to travel to a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars Reads Day returns to the 95th Street Library Sept. 28, offering fans of the interstellar saga a chance to break out their best costumes and indulge in their nerdiest fan fantasies.

The event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 3015 Cedar Glade Drive library, will feature dozens of interactive activities, crafts and games for fans of all ages.

“Families can expect something for everyone,” library manager Ellen Conlin said in a news release. “From crafts to costumed characters, lightsaber creation to green screen photos, Jedis of all ages will find something fun to do.”

To make sure you’re prepared with the proper skills to save the galaxy, stop by the free Shoot First Jedi Training from 3 to 4 p.m. to learn how to use your lightsaber like a true Jedi or connect with the force in the Jedi Meditation Room.

If you don’t already have a lightsaber, visit the lightsaber creation station at 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

To see the galaxy with your own eyes, try out the Interstellar Virtual Reality Station. New this year, the exhibit will allow fans to step into the Star Wars universe by wearing virtual reality goggles that simulate space from 10 a.m. to noon.

According to adult services librarian Christy Palangattil, Star Wars Reads Day appeals to a wide age group and young Jedis and more experienced Star Wars fans will both be able to participate in a variety of activities throughout the day.

“I appreciate the way it appeals to a diverse audience and multiple generations, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the way Star Wars has become a story that includes a variety of perspectives and backgrounds,” Palangattil said.

Others new activities this year include Star Wars Bingo and a First Order Escape Room. The latter will have fans take on the task of escaping a First Order base with the help of the resistance. Escape room sessions will run at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 2;30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Throughout the day, kids and older fans alike can get crafty by creating buttons and visiting the iron-on decorating station to put Star Wars themed patches on shirts and other fabrics. Droid enthusiasts can check out the CHI2-D2 Droid Builders Club and fans of the Dark Side can visit the library’s sound recording studio to record a phrase in Darth Vader’s voice.

Visitors can also check out merchandise from vendors, including Shoot First Cosplay Weapons, The Wandering Dragon Game Shoppe and Amazing Fantasy Books and Comics.

Fans are encouraged to come in costume. The event is free and open to the public, no matter what planet you’re from.
