Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) was presented with the Union League of Philadelphia’s Medal of Honor on Tuesday. It was first given to President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

“Honored to receive the Gold Medal from The Union League of Philadelphia. The League was founded in 1862 to preserve & advance freedom. In Florida, we are guided by the same enduring American principles that the League has strived to preserve,” the governor tweeted.

The prestigious award has previously been bestowed upon former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA), former Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), among others.

According to its website, the league was “founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln.” It abides by its “founding motto,” which is “Amor Patriae Ducit,” or “Love of country leads.”

In 2022, the league was voted the No. 1 city club in the country for the sixth time.

Not everyone in the city was excited about DeSantis being honored, however.

In videos posted to social media, a group of protesters can be seen gathering around the league’s headquarters with signs that read “Hate Hurts” and “Black Votes Matter.”

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D) was reportedly in attendance at the demonstration. “Why are you promoting this individual who, in their philosophy, sees so many people, Black and brown folks, LGBTQ+ folks, as secondhand citizens?” he reportedly said.

Per a report, a faction of league members were not pleased with the choice. They cited DeSantis’s prohibiting of certain books and what they claim is his elevation of those who deny the results of the 2020 election.
