A bear had barely gotten its bearings after sneaking into a car in Colorado on Thursday when it “apparently butt-shifted” into neutral and rolled 100 feet down a hill, police said.

During the Independence Day joyride, the car clipped a tree, popping open a door that allowed the bear to scamper out after the excursion, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

“Here’s a good reminder to keep your car doors locked, especially in bear country,” the sheriff’s office said in the post, which included a picture of the damaged vehicle.

It also served as another reminder why bears shouldn’t get behind the wheel.

In 2014, a bear in Colorado was spotted going berserk inside a black sedan and ripping up passenger seats.
