Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services is offering up to eight weeks of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges to those interested in quitting smoking.

Michigan residents trying to kick a cigarette habit can get free nicotine patches, gum or lozenges from the state this summer as part of a nationwide push to reduce smoking-related illness.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is offering up to eight weeks of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges to residents who call the Michigan Tobacco Quitline at 800-QUIT-NOW, or 800-784-8669.

The free products to quit smoking will be available through Sept. 30, and the Quitline is open to Michigan residents 24-7, according to state officials.

The offer coincides with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Tips From Former Smokers” campaign, which highlights stories of people living with the effects of smoking-related diseases and exposure to secondhand smoke.

“CDC’s Tips campaign reminds people of the harmful effects of smoking and connects them with important resources like the Michigan Tobacco Quitline,” Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy director for health, said in a statement. “MDHHS is committed to helping Michiganders quit tobacco products and reduce their risk of tobacco-related illnesses like cancer and heart disease.”
