Complete domination summed up Western’s school-record 74-0 win over visiting Miami Springs.
In the first half alone, the Wildcats broke the previous school record of 64 points as they scored five rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown and returned an interception, a punt and even a blocked punt, all for scores, as they built a 67-0 halftime lead.
“It was a good confidence-builder,” said Western coach Adam Ratkevich. “We’re really seeing them gel as a team and play a complete game.”
Western’s (2-0) stout defense started the scoring by registering a safety on the third play of the game and the Wildcats’ defense prevented Miami Springs (1-2) from gaining a single first down and held the Golden Hawks to -19 yards for the game.
Khaheim Simon scored the Wildcats first touchdown on a 1-yard run to make it 10-0.
Miles Friday added two rushing touchdowns later in the opening quarter to push the Western lead to 25-0.
After Cedquan Smith’s touchdown pass to Johnny Hoffman, the Wildcats’ Brian Blades returned a blocked punt five yards to make it 40-0 on the first play of the second quarter.
Later in the second quarter, Omar Simpson returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown and Justin Hodges returned an interception return 54 yards for a score that gave Western the 67-0 halftime lead.
