Kids and teens from across the region are putting the finishing touches on the Cannon Theatre’s production of “Seussical, The Musical,” playing this weekend and next in its 28 Andrews Parkway, Devens space.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all our favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life in this show that transports audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus.

The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton, who discovers a speck of dust inhabited by a world of tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers. And he’s also sitting on the nest, containing an abandoned egg, that the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird left in his care.

Horton is beset by danger and faces ridicule and a trial, but the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Sold out shows include 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 and 2 p.m.

IN THE WINGS

FINDING JOY: The Lowell Film Collaborative and Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust launch the 11th Eco Film Season on Tuesday, Jan. 31 with the virtual screening, via Zoom, of “Mission: Joy.” Subtitled “Finding Happiness in Troubled Times,” the film is about the historic meeting between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It traces the epic life stories of the Nobel Peace Prize winners as they faced oppression, exile, death threats, cancer and more – unbowed and still laughing. They are opposites in many ways, yet their friendship shows us that our shared humanity is bigger than our differences. Their life stories remind us that joy is an inside job, that joy and pain are inseparable, and that deep connection is one of the secrets to joy. The virtual meet and greet is at 6:30 and the film starts at 7 p.m. Visit https://lowelllandtrust.org/about-us-2-2/ecofilm-rsvp/ to RSVP and get your Zoom link.

WINTER DOLDRUMS: Winter is here, and unless you love the snow and cold, you’re climbing the walls. Not to worry. Just take a gander at the websites for Worcester’s Hanover Theatre and the Lowell Memorial Auditorium and you’ll see that both venues are bringing “Annie” to audiences in February. The best loved musical of all time features that feel good song “Tomorrow,” a passel of cute kids playing orphans, a delightful dog and a comical bad guy (we mean Miss Hannigan, of course). It plays the Hanover Feb. 23-26, with tickets starting at $39 and the LMA on February 27 with tickets starting at $39. Visit www.thehanovertheatre.org or www.lowellauditorium.com for info on “Annie” and other shows scheduled over the next few months to beat the winter blahs.

VALENTINE JAZZ: The Matthew Whitaker Quintet brings the sounds of soulful jazz to the concert hall of Groton Hill Music Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tickets start at $33.37 and are available, along with more info, at https://grotonhill.org/concerts/matthew-whitaker-quintet/.
