The digitisation of the Golden Globes meant that most major fashion moments were captured by celebrity stylists giving good glamour via Instagram. Who needs a red carpet when social media acts as a platform for high-fashion editorials? From Elle Fanning’s Old Hollywood tribute to Grace Kelly in a jaw-dropping ice-blue Gucci slip, to Rosamund Pike and Nicola Coughlan’s explosive Molly Goddard tulle party dresses that filled up the actors’ Zoom squares, creativity abounded against the odds during this year’s virtual awards ceremony. The devil, however, is in the details, and the most noteworthy moments were the small styling flourishes that might have slipped under the radar were it not for Insta close-ups captured by Hollywood’s dressers.

Naturally, the jewellery was fabulous (check out Carey Mulligan’s chunky crystal Cartier ear cuff, Anya Taylor-Joy’s delicate frosting of Tiffany & Co diamonds, and Viola Davis’s twinkling Pomellato chains). But one of our favourite accents came via an altogether more unusual type of iconography: the Prada triangular plaque drawn onto Sarah Paulson’s purple arm cast. “When you’re Lady Paulson, you get a custom Prada cast to go with your custom Prada dress,” explained Karla Welch of the purple plaster of Paris shrouding Paulson’s forearm.

Elsewhere, opera gloves got the cool-girl stamp of approval on Celeste (in Gucci) and Cynthia Erivo (in epic eye-watering green Valentino couture). And, the cult accessories that debuted during digital fashion weeks finally had their moment in the sun. Matthew Williams, who presented his fresh Givenchy vision in October, might not have predicted his spunky, horn-studded shoes would be worn by Laura Dern on an empty red carpet (presenters attended the ceremonies in person in New York and LA), but the designer always manages to be ahead of the curve.

A special shout out must go to Jodie Foster’s dog, who sat on the actor’s lap wearing a neckerchief that matched her graphic separates. And the tiny tear a Miu-Miu clad Emma Corrin painted on her face as a nod to a Pierrot clown. Who would have thought the last two absurdist sentences would make it into a Vogue awards-season round-up, but this year is nothing if not full of surprises. Thanks to Tinseltown’s creatives for bringing small moments of unexpected joy to a year that has otherwise been devoid of fantastical fashion moments. Bring on the Oscars.
