Alabama Adds Low Number of New Coronavirus Cases, But 48 Deaths

MONTGOMERY, AL — The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 536 new COVID-19 cases in the state Tuesday, the lowest single day total in nearly two months. However, the state also posted one of its largest death totals in a day, adding 48 deaths, which brought he state total to 1,781 fatalities from the virus.

In the last two weeks, the state has averaged 1,401 new COVID-19 cases per day, which is good news for the state, as July saw daily averages close to 2,000. The state has confirmed 99,926 COVID-29 cases since the pandemic began, with 37,923 of those cases presumed to have recovered from the virus.

Clarke County and Jefferson County were the only counties to post more than 100 new cases of the virus Tuesday, making up more than a third of the new cases statewide. Montgomery County posted zero new cases Tuesday, the first day in months the county has reported no new cases.

The counties posting the most new cases Tuesday:

• Clarke County: 164 new cases; 826 total
• Jefferson County: 108 new cases; 13,366 total
• Mobile County: 64 new cases; 10,581 total
• Tuscaloosa County: 39 new cases; 4,269 total
• Elmore County: 29 new cases; 1,760 total
