It’s common to encounter actors and celebrities who say “what they should say” instead of “what they are thinking.” It’s what we often call “being diplomatic.” From the interviewer’s point of view, we’re often left wanting more than what’s been said.
In that sense, Shun Oguri only says what he is thinking. He receives questions as is, responding intentionally and authentically. At times he says, “I don’t know,” and there are moments where we are left in a slight sweat after he says things that can’t be written out in an article. But since this is his honest self, we are nudged to engage with the rawness of his words.
Some might consider this quality as callous or a hassle. However, when we look at his career, it becomes apparent that people want to work with him and support him because of Shun Oguri’s raw authenticity.
Oguri is never satisfied with the way things are. He is constantly starving, thirsting, craving something. Regardless of the size of the production or the level of success a piece might garner, he is not yet satisfied. This yearning, this thirst, is what fuels him as an actor. Shun Oguri—the man who keeps running. And to him, his goal is still a far reach from where he stands today.
──Tell me about your favorite kind of music.
I listen to Japanese music from the 1960s~1970s quite often.
──Where and when do you listen to music?
At home while I’m having a drink, I play it at a quiet volume. Sort of like the background music at a store. It’s fun to listen and occasionally have that “oh, I know this song,” moment.
──If you had one day off, what would you do?
Golf.
──And if you had three days off?
Maybe travel locally. Like an onsen hot spring.
──What about one week off?
If it’s a week, it’ll definitely be a local trip. Maybe hit up Okinawa.
──If you had 3 months off, what would you do?
Travel abroad with my family.
──If you could buy anything at all, what would you want?
A store where I can eat whatever I like, whenever I want to. These days I try to go to a good-looking restaurant, and they make you wait months for a reservation. Instead of waiting for months, I want a restaurant where I can eat what I want when I want to.
──What was your childhood dream?
I really admired chefs.
──Did you like cooking?
No, I was influenced by the TV Show, “The Chef,” featuring Noriyuki Higashiyama.
──If you were to grade your current self, what would the score be?
Hmmm…70. I’m still a work in progress, but 50 would be a little harsh.
──How can the world be happier?
That’s a tough one…wait. No more smartphones.
──Do you ever egosurf?
I used to, but not anymore. I sometimes look up the pieces I’ve starred in, but not myself. I’m only going to get hurt (laughs)!
──What do you do to unwind?
I go to the sauna.
──What are you into these days?
Horseback riding. I’ve been doing it for a while, but I fell in love with it even more while working on the period drama. If I’m free, I want to be riding horses.
──Do you cook?
Yes, but sometimes.
──What is your specialty?
Not really a specialty but things that anyone can cook. Like curries or stewed dishes.
──Can you go out to eat on your own?
Yeah easily. I go to ramen spots or beef bowl spots every once in a while.
──What does your fridge always need to have?
Beer.
──What will your “last supper” be?
Instant fried noodles.
──Meticulous? Or Laid back?
A bit of both. Half-half.
──Favorite movie?
“Back To The Future.” Especially the second one.
──Actor or director that’s impacted you?
There are so many, but Steven McQueen was the first one who left a big impression on me.
──Do you go to movie theatres? Or stream online?
I do both, but I try to watch movies at theatres as much as I can.
──What was the last movie you saw at a movie theatre?
Most recently, I watched “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
──A book you read recently that left an impression on you?
Shigematsu Kiyoshi’s “Vitamin F.” It’s about parenting, so I tried to imagine how I’d be as a parent while reading it.
──What’s your favorite literary genre and author?
I try to read literature from different genres, but I like Shigematsu Kiyoshi so I read his books quite a bit.
──Where do you read?
While I’m on the move.
──Do you read manga? What genre and manga do you like?
In my 20s, I used to buy manga magazines everyday, but ever since I hit my 30s I haven’t really read manga much. I might read something if it’s recommended by someone. Oh, but I still read “Onepiece” and Kingdom.”
──Favorite color and why you like.
For some reason, I like green. I pick a lot of green clothes.
──Three things you do every morning.
Brush my teeth, change the water on the kamidana (household altar), and have a cup of warm water.
──Tell us about a skincare product you use frequently
Yosuke Kubozuka gifted me a toner and moisturizer that he produced, and it really works on my skin. So it’s become a favorite of mine and I’ve kept using it.
──Do you wear perfume?
I wear different perfumes depending on my mood. Sometimes I choose the perfume depending on the role I’m playing. Like, based off of the image of the character. Sometimes the smell helps me embody the character more naturally. I’ve been using “diptyque” recently.
──What do you do before you sleep?
I know it’s not the best, but even when I’m not in the mood to drink, I have a drink of booze. I think part of me thinks I won’t be able to sleep without it.
──A memorable TV show?
“Minor (Miseinen)” featuring Ishida Issei comes to mind.
──A memorable variety show?
“Kato-chan and Ken-chan Gokigen TV” (laughs). I used to look forward to watching it every week.
──When was the last time you cried?
I cry a lot for work (laughs). I guess in my private life—was when I watched a movie. “Spider-Man” made me cry a little too.
──Out of all the places you’ve traveled to, where do you like the most?
LA. The weather is great and I like the freeness there.
──Something you want to try out?
My kids started learning karate, so I’ve been wanting to try it out too.
──What’s your motto?
Tomorrow is another day! I guess?
