Country Music Star, Former UAB QB Sam Hunt Facing DUI Charges

Country music star Sam Hunt was arrested in Nashville and charged with DUI and having an open container Thursday morning, officials said.

NASHVILLE, TN — Country music star and former University of Alabama at Birmingham football player Sam Hunt was arrested Thursday morning and charged with driving under the influence, according to police. Court documents say Hunt was booked into the Davidson County Jail just after 6 a.m.

Hunt also was charged with having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. He posted bond of $2,500 and was released around 9:15 a.m., records show. He has a court date set for Jan. 17.

Hunt, 34, was a quarterback on the UAB football team from 2005 to 2007, and graduated from UAB with a degree in economics. Hunt threw for 1,905 yards, 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2007. He tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs but did not make the team.

Hunt moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, during which he has won multiple awards and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards.

Friday, Hunt issued a statement via Twitter apologizing for what he referred to as a "poor and selfish decision."
