CVS Limiting Vaccine To Preregistered Seniors In Virginia

VIRGINIA — CVS has pushed back the start date of COVID-19 vaccinations at select Virginia stores to Feb. 12, and appointment scheduling will begin on Feb. 11. Only individuals 65 and older who have preregistered for the vaccine with their local health department can schedule appointments.

The updated guidance limiting vaccine appointments to preregistered seniors comes from the Virginia Department of Health. Individuals must be on a vaccine wait list with their local health department to be eligible for a CVS vaccine appointment.

CVS will have 36 Virginia locations be part of that initial rollout. Based on the number of doses expected to be received by CVS in Virginia, That includes communities in Northern Virginia: Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Gainesville, and Leesburg.

Once appointment booking opens, individuals must register in advance for an appointment on the CVS website or CVS app. Those without internet access can call the CVS customer service at 800-746-7287. Individuals must have an appointment; walk-ins will not be accepted.

CVS will introduce vaccines on a limited basis as part of a federal pharmacy program; Walgreens also plans to offer the vaccine in others states.

At Gov. Ralph Northam's Friday news briefing, 24 of the 36 CVS locations were identified. These locations were classified as having a high number of vulnerable populations and COVID-19 impact.

CVS will expand to more locations and offer additional appointments as more supply becomes available. Eventually vaccines will be available at all CVS Pharmacy locations in the U.S. subject to product availability. CVS will have the capacity to administer 20 million to 25 million shots per month in the U.S.

As of Feb. 4, pharmacies have administered 28,300 doses of the vaccine in the state, according to Virginia Department of Health data. The majority of doses administered so far can be attributed to hospitals (349,744 doses) and local health departments (243,162 doses). In Virginia, an estimated 9.1 percent of the population has the first dose. There are 775,357 people with at least one dose, and 145,284 people are fully vaccinated.
