Alexandria Summer Recreation Programs In Question

Registration for summer programs is suspended and some park features remain closed in the city.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria has suspended registration for Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities summer camps and other programs. Registration had been scheduled for May 6, but uncertainty remains about future coronavirus-related social distancing restrictions.

According to the city, summer camps and other programs will need to be adjusted to the governor's stay-at-home order through June 10 and other social distancing guidelines. The city is awaiting potential new state guidance for social distancing during the summer months. Spring programs were previously canceled.

The city's recreation, nature and art centers continue to be closed. All, activities, events, private rentals, reservations and registrations are suspended or canceled. Unfenced parks, trails and fields remain open, but certain features are closed. The closures apply to public playgrounds, park restrooms, parking lots at parks, public sports courts, fenced fields, fenced dog parks, outdoor fitness stations. Alexandria's City Marina is only accessibly to license holding boaters only.

Park visitors are asked to follow these social distancing guidelines:

  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others.
  • Don’t visit parks if you are sick or were recently exposed to COVID-19.
  • Don’t visit crowded parks.
  • Don’t use playgrounds.
  • Don’t participate in group activities or sports.
  • Follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As of Friday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 802 cases of the new coronavirus, 24 deaths and 104 hospitalizations in Alexandria. The highest number of new daily cases so far was 54 on Thursday, April 30.
