BISMARCK — North Dakota first lady Kathryn Burgum will receive an award from a national student organization that promotes youth health and safety, the governor's office said Monday, June 24.

Students Against Destructive Decisions, known as SADD, will recognize Burgum with its Outstanding Contribution Award. Burgum's office said the award is given to "an individual who has consistently worked to promote the safety of young people."

Burgum will receive the award during the organization's national conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., Tuesday.

“I am grateful to be recognized by such a proactive organization committed to solutions for the challenges that many youths are facing like addiction and stigma," she said in a statement.

After publicly disclosing her own battles with alcohol, Burgum has made fighting addiction a priority as first lady.
