Keyonta Marshall, former standout at Saginaw and Grand Valley, dies

Keyonta Marshall, who was an All-American at Grand Valley State and played briefly in the NFL, has died.

He was 37.

Marshall, known at “Big Key,” died Friday at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

News of his death was tweeted by Grand Valley State.

Marshall was a four-year standout on the defensive line at Saginaw High School. He signed to play for the University of Hawaii, but after his redshirt season he transferred to Grand Valley State, where he thrived from 2001-04. He was a three-time All-America and was a member of two NCAA Division II national championships.

After college, Marshall was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles. He appeared in one game with the Eagles in 2005. He was also on the practice squad with the New York Jets in 2006. In between, he played a season in Europe with Hamburg.

On his Facebook page, Marshall’s job was listed as NFL finance and investments.
