Stony Brook University police received a report of a suspicious man wearing a tactical vest from the hospital's emergency department at about 9 p.m. Tuesday. An off-duty NYPD officer who had just dropped his father off at the emergency room was the first to notice the man, who had ammo clips sticking out of the pockets of the vest and a backpack, the Daily News reported.

Officers located the man and recovered what appeared to be a BB gun, Stony Brook University Police Chief Robert Lenahan said. The man is not affiliated with the university, officials said.
After taking the man into custody, officers observed a suspicious object in his backpack. Two floors of the hospital were evacuated while the Suffolk County Police Department's Emergency Services Unit assessed the contents of the backpack.
In a statement Wednesday morning, Lenahan said: "The man's backpack was searched, rendered safe and items removed for further analysis. University Hospital has resumed normal operations."
