Days after welcoming her third child with Kanye West via surrogate, Kim Kardashian is getting candid about what it was really like to make the decision to not carry her own child. In a post shared to her official website and app on Thursday, Kim clarifies that she used a gestational carrier, “the technical term for a woman who carries a baby that she has no biological relationship to.”

According to Kim, who suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accrete during her pregnancies with North and Saint, she went through an agency to find her gestational carrier. She writes, “Although I never would have expected to go through something like this, the agency was so helpful and made me feel at ease about the whole process.” Kim says the agency ran a background check and reviewed the carrier’s medical history before everyone was on board. “Kanye and I were so blessed to have found the most amazing gestational carrier. We have a great relationship with her and trusted her completely throughout the entire process.”

Elsewhere in her post, Kim writes about how having a gestational carrier affected her emotionally. For starters, it’s not the “easy way out.” She writes, “People assume it’s better because you don’t have to deal with the physical changes, pain or complications with delivery, but for me it was so hard to not carry my own child, especially after I carried North and Saint.” She advises that while this option is not for everyone, “I absolutely love my gestational carrier and this was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Of her first moments with her new baby girl, Kim says they connected “instantly… as if she was with us the whole time.”
