Enjoy the sun while it lasts! Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to be DRENCHED as huge rain bomb sweeps across Australia's east coast

  • Rain predicted in most parts of NSW from Wednesday through to weekend
  • Rain forecast along Australia's east coast from Melbourne to as far as Brisbane
  • The predicted downpour follows the driest September on record

Don't put the umbrella away just yet if you live on the east coast.

While Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane enjoyed a glimpse of summer on Monday, forecasters are warning the warm weather won't last all week.

A much-needed downpour is forecast for most of New South Wales from Wednesday right through to the weekend, which is expected to bring relief to many drought-stricken farmers.

The predicted soaking follows the driest September on record.

Most districts of NSW can expected rain with the exception of the state's far west and north west, according to Sky News Weather Channel's Tom Saunders.

Cobar in the state's central west will record its wettest week so far this year if the town receives 15 millimetres or more in the next week.

Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe told news.com.au that rainfall could be widespread on the east coast and in some inland areas from east of Melbourne all the way up to Brisbane.

'It will really build into NSW on Thursday and as the upper trough moves pretty much on top of the low pressure system there could be areas of rain right across eastern parts of NSW,' he said.

'As we move into Friday there's a chance we'll see a low pressure system developing close to the coast and there could be some powerful winds associated with that.'

Sydney could receive almost half a month’s rain in three days with up to 15 millilitres expected on Thursday.

Friday will also be a miserable day across the city with up to 10mm expected.

The state's NSW north coast is also set to get a drenching with Nambucca Heads forecast to receive 35mm in the coming days.

Thursday will be a dreary day in the nation's capital with up to 20mm forecast for Canberra.

South of the border, Wednesday will be the wettest day in Melbourne with up to 3mm forecast before warming up to 22 degrees by the weekend.

There's a 70 per cent chance of rain for Brisbane on Friday with up to 10mm and possible storms forecast with more rain over the weekend.

Elsewhere across Australia, fire warnings are in place for parts of the Northern Territory and northern Queensland.

In the west, possible storms are predicted for Perth on Wednesday and Thursday, while Wednesday will be Hobart's wettest day this week.
