A 22-year-old man was shot Saturday by an unknown person who had flagged him down while he was driving and attempted to steal items from his vehicle.

Longmont detectives are following up on several leads and possible suspects, Detective Cody Clark said in an email Thursday.

About 2:15 a.m. Saturday, a 22-year-old man was driving in the area of Grand View Meadows Drive and Clover Basin Drive when he was flagged down by a man in a blue sweatshirt with a black backpack, Clark said.

When the driver rolled down the passenger window, the man reached into the vehicle in an apparent attempt to steal items from within the vehicle, Clark said. The driver tried to retrieve the items being taken, but the man produced a handgun and shot him. As the victim drove away, the man continued to fire an unknown number of times, hitting the victim’s vehicle at least once, Clark said.

The victim drove himself to a local hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. The bullet had traveled to his neck, Clark said. Due to the severity of the injuries, the victim was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital by medical helicopter. He is expected to live.

Longmont Public Safety Department is asking anyone with information on the case to contact Clark at 303-774-4392 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) if they wish to remain anonymous.
