ATLANTA, GA — There's a knack to blending the spices to give a platter of fried chicken that special taste. If you are yearning for a great chicken dinner, the food website The Daily Meal has just released its updated picks of the 75 Best Fried Chicken Places In America for 2019, and Georgia is represented.

The best place for fried chicken in Georgia is Mary Mac's Tea Room in Atlanta at No. 9, Watershed on Peachtree in Atlanta at No. 38, and Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room in Savannah at No. 44. Overall on the list, the top spot goes to Willie Mae's Scotch House in New Orlean, No. 2 is Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken in Mason, Tennessee, and No. 3 is the Barbecue Inn in Houston, Texas.

Here's how The Daily Meal folks describe the range of fantastic fried chicken specialties nationwide: "Fried chicken is one of the most delicious foods on the planet, and these spots do it best. ... When done properly, it hits just about every right note in the culinary book: tender and juicy, salty, crunchy, fatty. There’s a reason why it’s become a thing of cultish devotion, one of the primary reasons being that it’s much harder to get right than you might think. Some places, however, don’t just get it right; they turn the dish into a transcendent experience."

Of Mary Mac's Tea Room The Daily Meal editors said the restaurant "is an Atlanta institution that has been making diners happy since 1945. The fried chicken is one of the best dishes there, and the recipe is simple yet unique: After being rubbed with salt and white pepper and chilled for an hour, it's dunked in a wet batter of water, flour, salt and white pepper, then dredged in more flour, salt and white pepper before being deep fried in 325-degree peanut oil. The combination of both breading a batter is an absolute winner."

Here's what the food editors said of "Watershed on Peachtree has moved locations and gone through a couple head chefs in the past decade, but it still serves some of the best fried chicken in Atlanta. It’s famed for its brined and buttermilk-soaked chicken, which is fried in a winning combination of lard and ham fat and served with biscuits, collard greens, a deviled egg, hot honey and a pickle. But be warned: It’s only available in very limited quantities."
