VIRGINIA — Memorial Day weekend is coming up to unofficially kick off summer. Usually that means beach trips, other vacations and outdoor parties, but this year is different due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Virginia's first phase of easing coronavirus-related restrictions is delayed for Northern Virginia, the city of Richmond and Eastern Shore's Accomack County. These localities remain under a stay-at-home order, which calls for residents to remain home except for essential purposes. The reopening is delayed through at least May 28.

The rest of Virginia is under the first phase of lifting restrictions, opening places like outdoor dining at restaurants and private campgrounds. The guidance has changed from "stay at home" to "safer at home," but residents are encouraged to stay at home when possible, continue social distancing and wear face coverings. Gatherings over 10 people remain banned.

Gov. Ralph Northam will allow Virginia Beach to reopen its beaches for recreational activities on Friday, May 22, while beaches in other localities must remain open for exercise and fishing only. Virginia Beach has prepared an enforcement plan with beach ambassadors monitoring social distancing on beaches and enhanced cleaning of high-touch areas. Beach parking will be capped at 50 percent capacity. State parks are open for daytime activities, and local park policies may vary.

Virginia Patch has put together this informal survey about people's plans for the Memorial Day weekend and summer amid the pandemic. Whether you plan to stay in or take a trip, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Responses are being taken through noon Thursday.
