Chuckie O’Brien, the longtime associate of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, is dead at 86.
Jack Goldsmith stated in a blog that his stepfather died Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla., from an apparent heart attack.
O’Brien, who was a prime suspect in Hoffa’s 1975 disappearance, was recently portrayed by Jesse Plemons in “The Irishman.”
The Hoffa protégé was linked to his boss for decades when the labor leader transformed the Teamsters into one of America’s most powerful unions from the late 1950s to the early 1970s.
After Hoffa’s vanishing, federal agents publicly accused O’Brien of driving his boss to his murder and questioned him at least a dozen times, reported The Associated Press.
Although Goldsmith called the accusation false, “practically everyone believed it,” he said.
O’Brien, who viewed Hoffa as a father figure during a 2006 interview, adamantly denied being linked to Hoffa’s disappearance. He also doubted the mystery would ever be solved.
“It’s very frustrating,” said O’Brien at the time. “I have so much inside, my love for him and his family.”
When Hoffa assumed the Teamsters presidency in 1957, O’Brien was just 23 years old when he was tapped to become Hoffa’s special assistant, according to Goldsmith.
“They were so close, and Hoffa treated Chuckie with such affection, that many people thought Hoffa was his biological father,” recalled Goldsmith.
“The Irishman” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Director Martin Scorsese but was shut out at Sunday’s ceremony.
