PALO ALTO, U.S. -- The threat of an armed Chinese takeover of Taiwan persists, the U.S. Department of Defense warned in its annual report on military developments involving the Asian power.

"Although China advocates for peaceful unification with Taiwan, China has never renounced the use of military force, and continues to develop and deploy advanced military capabilities needed for a potential military campaign," the Pentagon told Congress in the report issued Thursday.
