Firefighters made more progress on the YMCA Fire on Saturday, reaching 60 percent containment, according to an update Saturday evening.

The fire remains at 293 acres despite the hot and dry conditions Saturday. Fire crews said afternoon winds tested containment lines constructed by crews during the past few days, but the lines held.

Officials said because of the downturn in fire activity, one helicopter was assigned to the fire Saturday and no bucket drops were necessary.

Smoke may be visible from Cañon City and neighboring areas during the next few days as interior fuels and portions of the inaccessible north edge of the fire are expected to continue burning.

As containment grows, fire crews will consider what resources will be necessary to continue work on the YMCA Fire. Some crews will be made available for other assignments or return to their home units.
