Grand Forks police are investigating a reported attempted robbery that occurred early Friday morning at Tri-State Paving, Inc.

According to police, a Tri-State employee called at 6 a.m. to report two men who had “made entry” into a building there and were attempting to steal a pair of dirt bikes inside. The employee was carrying a legal firearm, police said.

“The two males were confronted and began to advance toward the reporting party. The suspects were holding unknown possible weapons in their hands and did not stop when given a verbal warning,” Sgt. Kristofer Brown wrote in a news release. “The reporting party fired warning shots away from the suspects causing the suspects to flee on foot. The suspects then entered into a dark-colored vehicle that was parked just to the north of the business and the vehicle drove north.”

Brown wrote that the employee nor the two men were injured. The two men reportedly took nothing from the business.

Police described the first man as a “darker colored” African American man with three dreadlocks over his right eye who was wearing a black sweatshirt, and the second as another “darker colored” African American man who was wearing a teal or turquoise sweatshirt. Both are six feet tall, according to police, who asked for anyone with information about the alleged attempted robbery to call 701-787-8000, submit a tip via the department’s Facebook page or website, or via its “Tip411” app.
