Major travel disruption is expected as Hammersmith Bridge is shut to traffic for more than a week while emergency repairs are carried out.

The 130-year-old bridge will be closed from 5pm on Saturday, October 21 until 5am on Sunday, October 29 as its decking undergoes repair work.

Transport for London has warned roads in and around the area will be much busier than usual and buses will be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Some 72 bus services will be diverted in both directions via Chiswick Bridge while others will terminate before Hammersmith Bridge.

Most of Routes 33, 209, 419 and 485 will start and finish south of the bridge.

Pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge but cyclists will need to dismount and walk across or cycle over Chiswick or Putney Bridge.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is working with TfL in order to finalise plans for major repairs to the bridge in 2018.

These latest works will protect it and make sure that it can continue to be used until the major repairs are carried out, the council said.

Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor Wesley Harcourt added: “The safety of everyone using our historic bridge is our priority and regrettably these urgent repairs are essential to keeping the bridge safe and operational ahead of the major refurbishment work.

“We’re doing these works during half-term to minimise disruption to our residents, but appreciate that some people will still be affected. We want to give residents as much notice as possible to make alternative travel arrangements, or anticipate any delays.”
