It’s 2019, but Michigan is still talking about stick shifts

Michigan drivers, apparently, enjoy a challenge.

That’s because Michigan is the state where the most people talk about driving a manual transmission car or truck. In other words, vehicles with stick shifts.

That’s according to the car-crazy team at Autowise, a news source dedicated to all things regarding automobiles, which crunched the numbers based on geotagged twitter data since Jan. 1.

More than 20,000 tweets were tracked as part of the survey, particularly terms like manual transmission and stick shift.

The findings are somewhat interesting considering manual transmission vehicles, and people who can drive them, are quickly disappearing from the roads.

But regionally, it looks like the Midwest has the most manual drivers left despite the fact that just 2 percent of cars sold in 2018 had manual transmissions.

Michigan, of course, his home to Detroit, the Motor City, so it might not be that surprising that it’s the state with the most drivers capable of handling a stick shift. It’s also worth noting that Twitter data is far from a scientific source.

Still, interesting findings, nonetheless. Can you drive a stick shift?

The top 10 manual driving states are as follows:

  1. Michigan
  2. Missouri
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Washington
  5. Tennessee
  6. Texas
  7. Ohio
  8. Indiana
  9. Illinois
  10. Kentucky
