Where kids can find free summer lunches in Washtenaw County

ANN ARBOR, MI - Kids who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year could go without nutritious food once summer vacation starts.

The Summer Food Service Program is an attempt to change that.

Food Gatherers, the largest sponsor of the program in Washtenaw County, will serve more than 30,000 free meals at 31 locations.

Ypsilanti Community Schools and the Ypsilanti District Library will also have meal sites around the county.

The meals are available to children age 18 or younger and students enrolled in special education programs up to age 26 from June 17 to Aug. 23.

“This is a way to make sure kids can get healthy food throughout the summer in a fun way that builds up the community,” said Markell Miller, director of community food programs.

The program is only available in areas with lower-income families, but the meals are open to any child who shows up, Miller said.

The Michigan Department of Education and Toyota provided funding for the program, Miller said.

All sites are closed on July 4.
