A man wanted on out-of-state warrants on charges including violent stalking and sex assault was chased down the Massachusetts Turnpike and arrested in an ordeal that lasted roughly an hour and a half.

Kevin Oldaker, 48, of Poplar Grove, Ill., was apparently sleeping in the backseat of a 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor when a trooper found him at the Charlton Service Plaza just before 7:30 Wednesday morning.

The vehicle had been reported stolen from Biddeford, Maine, according to the State Police.

The State Police said in a statement that the man refused to get out of the car and claimed he had lost his keys before starting the ignition and leading State Police west down the turnpike.

During the pursuit, the State Police said he changed direction by turning around at a highway crossover in Chicopee before doing the same to return westbound in Ludlow before the escape attempt ended with a punctured tire three miles from the New York border in Stockbridge.

The police had deployed a “tire deflation device” in the roadway there.

Oldaker allegedly refused to surrender and a “brief standoff ensued,” according to the police, but he eventually surrendered and was arrested just after 9 a.m.

Oldaker was wanted in Maine not only for the stolen car but also a warrant issued last week charging him with violent stalking. Another warrant from his home state of Illinois from 2014 charges him with home invasion and sex assault.
