Tri-Valley High Schoolers Share 'Corona Chronicles': Poem

Two Pleasanton high school students reflect on the past year and what lies ahead in a poem submitted to Patch.

A poem from Pleasanton students Ishmeet Dhillon of Amador Valley High School and Darina Nestorova of Foothill High School:

Corona Chronicles

Remember when the streets were buzzing with excitement?

With people glee and glum.
Little children with their lollipops,
And adults out on a run.

Yet little did they know that their lives would soon change,

And looking back into that time,
Our time now is a bit strange.

Now look outside onto the streets,
Not a person in sight,
The cars are parked in their driveways,
The only “bright” thing we see is daylight.
Yet little do we know when this will start to end,
Now looking into the future,
Our time now is a very long and boring weekend.

Essential workers are hard at work,
Trying to help us all,
They don’t know how to cure this,
We just want to go to the mall.

Yet little do some people know how much this year means to us,

Now looking at my promotion dress,
I hope I can get a refund.

Remember when we could play outside,
Running races with our neighbors,
Well now the only thing we play is
the crossword in the newspaper.
Yet little do we know how long this is going to last,
Now looking hopefully out our windows,
We want this to end fast.

Outbursts happening across the world,
In frustration, plea, and hate,
Leaders being blamed,
And patients increasing at a high rate.

For their color, for their culture,
Some people are being hurt and wounded,
For things they haven’t even done,
Their rights continue to be looted.

We stare at the walls,
Counting minutes as they pass,
When we really should be staring at our screens,
Listening to our online class.

We may complain and blame others,
We may fuss about,
But what we need to understand is,
Throwing a tantrum isn’t going to help out.

As distribution of shots and hope,
Has started to occur,
It really makes us wonder,
How this past year has gone by in a blur.
Engineers, doctors, scientists, and farmers,
All working night and day,
To help, aid, and assist,
And make sure that our people are safe.

All we really can do is wait,
For the events to unfold
Let our destiny be told by fate
And then this story will be told.
