IRVINE, CA — Taco Bell's latest deal is sure to send its taco-loving fans over the moon.

When the moon hits its next lunar phase — now dubbed by the Irvine-based chain as the "Taco Moon" — customers can receive a free Crunchy Taco. And according to celestial authorities, that day will be Tuesday.

"On May 4, the world’s largest and brightest object in the night sky will resemble a favorite indulgence, the taco — a new lunar phase we are affectionately calling the 'Taco Moon,'" said company officials, adding: "Taco Bell does not claim to own copyrights to a lunar phase of the moon, but stands behind the fact this really does look like a Taco Bell taco."

Patrons can hone in on the heavenly promo from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., basically all day, either in-store, through the app or online. No purchase is required, but the offer is only at participating locales and while supplies last.

"As we’re opening more and more restaurants internationally, we know the May 4 moon will take us to new ‘heights’ as we introduce ourselves to new future fans in a delicious way,” said Julie Felss Masino, Taco Bell International president.

Taco Bell's origins date to 1954 when Glen Bell started Bell's Drive-In and Taco Tia in the San Bernardino area, later opening his first "Taco Bell" restaurant in Downey in 1962, and then bringing on his first franchisee in 1964 — a retired L.A. policemen, Kermit Becky, who opened a location in Torrance.

Now with more than 7,000 restaurants in the U.S., the company is entering its 32nd international market and heading to its goal to operate 10,000 restaurants worldwide in the coming decade, management said.

And if encouraging hungry eyes to see taco-shapes in half-moons isn't enough, the chain also is kicking off in coming months a new, international campaign, titled “I See A Taco,” inviting consumers outside of the U.S. to "see tacos" everywhere.

Taco Bell devotees keen on cashing in on Tuesday's "Taco Moon" freebie, can peruse this list of locations and check to confirm the deal is offered at their nearest site.
