HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Goll's Bakery celebrated its 90th anniversary this month.

"It's a family-owned business that needs no introduction for people who are from Havre de Grace or live in Havre de Grace," Havre de Grace Mayor William Martin said at Monday night's City Council meeting.

Council President David Glenn recalled picking up the marshmallow-filled doughnuts with his dad on Saturdays, as well as cinnamon buns, éclairs and "of course those famous tarts that the Goll family has always made each and every week," Glenn said. He recalled picking them up with his dad on Saturdays since moving to Havre de Grace in 1967.

"He was surprised," Zinner said. "It was a nice tribute."

Mayor Martin read a proclamation into the record for the city.

Goll's is an "old-fashioned German bakery that has been a Havre de Grace tradition since 1930," the proclamation said. Eugene and Elsa, age 18 and 17, were the children of German bakers. They "met and married in Philadelphia, arrived in Havre de Grace on their honeymoon weekend and wasted no time opening their bakery on Dec. 1, 1930," Martin said.

Both were from German baker families.

"Their delicious pastries, family recipe, quality ingredients and strong work ethic have created a success that has maintained the business for 90 years," the proclamation said.

The mayor thanked the Goll family on behalf of the city for its dedication.

Goll's Bakery is at 234 North Washington Street n Havre de Grace.
