Reader's view: Community benefits from volunteering

Where would we be without volunteers? And where could we be with more?

I recently came across volunteers Dan Proctor and a group of Harbor City International School students improving the already-beautiful Chester Creek Trail. They were there just because making things better mattered to them. The only reward was knowing that the world was just a little better because of their efforts.

This is true everywhere volunteers lend a hand. I appreciate them all. Our communities get built bit by bit with many hands sharing the work. We get to know each other, and we feel a bit of ownership in our community. If you haven’t volunteered, it can be as simple as your own individual effort of picking up a bit of trash in a community area or as organized as building a home. There is a need nearly everywhere for just about any skill. Give it a try.
