Update 16/10 17:45: Sara Sampaio reignited the Twitter argument, accusing Jameela Jamil of having a "condescending tone", and saying that it made her "impossible to have a conversation with".

Jameela responded with: "I'm not condescending to you Sara. I'm being very direct. You misunderstood my tweet that 35000 people understood correctly, and then turned it into a fight that was about your feelings rather than a systemic problem that we BOTH know is prevalent in this industry."

The actress and activist then also pointed out that Sampaio works for Victoria's Secret, a brand which is hardly known for its inclusivity.

Original story 16/10 10:29: Victoria's Secret Angel Sara Sampaio has started a Twitter debate with Jameela Jamil over the actress' comments about the modelling industry.

It all started when Jamil retweeted a video of models dancing on the catwalk at Vienna Fashion Week 2018, with the caption: “Oh my god this looks like the most fun, and not a long-starved terrified teenager in sight. Beautiful.”

This caught the attention of Sampaio, who then called her out for generalising the industry and made the point that not all models were starving.

Jamil responded to her, which led to the pair clashing online. “I didn’t say all models in my tweet so try to calm down," she wrote.

"But I will say there is a *vast* majority issue with young girls starving themselves, and using drugs and cocaine to control their weight, to meet the very small sample sizes. If you don’t see that, then you are in a bubble.”

Sampaio clarified that eating disorders and drug use aren't an exclusive problem to models: "You didn’t say all models, sure, but you still chose to attack girls just so you can celebrate others."

"Eating disorders, drugs and cocaine use aren’t a exclusive problem of models, it’s a huge problem is society as a whole. And when you talk like you know for sure majority of [sic]."

Jamil later clarified that she was in fact calling out the industry, rather than the young models who walk the catwalks.

Victoria's Secret, of which Sampaio is a long-serving ambassador, and which has faced criticism for its lack of body diversity in the past, recently cast its first curve model.

Last week, Ali Tate-Cutler was featured in a new campaign. The model announced via Instagram that she is first size 14 model to work with the brand, explaining that the move was "a step in the right direction".
