Spotify announce new ‘visual elements’

The Spotlight multimedia format will be added to podcasts, audiobooks, and other content

Spotify have announced new visual elements will be added to the app.

The streaming service is currently the largest of its kind in the world, with over 70 million users worldwide.

The Spotlight multimedia format will add new visual elements to podcasts, audiobooks, news, and other content. Spotify have already partnered with the likes of Buzzfeed News, Cheddar, Lenny Letter for the project.

In a statement, Courtney William Holt, Head of Studios and Video, said: “We are excited to launch Spotlight, a new format that merges great storytelling, news, information, and opinion with visual elements all delivered in playlist form across a number of content categories. Playlists play an important role in the daily lives of our users, bringing them closer to the creators they love.”

Spotlight will only be available in the United States for now, but the new feature will be released in other countries “in the near future”.

At the start of this year, Spotify filed to go public on the New York Stock Exchange. According to Bloomberg  and Axios, the streaming giant filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in December with a view to going public in early 2018.

Spotify are not thought to be looking to raise capital, but are instead attempting a unique trading system known as ‘direct listing’.
