Portland State men's basketball coach Barret Peery has signed an extension with the Vikings that will keep him under contract through the 2022-23 season, the Vikings announced on Thursday.
Peery came to PSU in April 2017 and led the Vikings to a 20-win season in 2017-18. Using a high-paced offense and a pressing defense, PSU notched wins over Pac-12 foes Stanford and California, and nine of the Vikings' wins came in second-half comebacks.
"Coach Peery has done an excellent job of breathing life into Viking men's basketball," PSU athletic director Valerie Cleary said in a statement. "We truly have a sleeping giant on the Park Blocks. With the opening to the renovated Peter W. Stott Center and the new Viking Pavilion, we have provided our team with a new home. Now we need to build a strong foundation for the future success of men's basketball and Coach Peery has demonstrated his skill, excitement and drive to create a championship team."
The extension adds a year to Peery's five-year deal and also includes a salary increase, the Vikings said.
"I'm extremely thankful and grateful for the commitment that Portland State has made to me, my family and especially the program," Peery said in a statement. "We are very committed to building a strong program that is one people can put their arms around and be excited to support."
After playing their 2017-18 home games at Lewis & Clark during the completion of the new Viking Pavilion, PSU is set to begin play at the new arena in November.
In 2018-19, PSU will return two starters, including point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods, the Big Sky Conference freshman of the year last season.
